Trieste International Foundation for the Progress and Freedom of Science

Instituted in 1980 at Duino Castle, the Fondazione Internazionale Trieste per il Progresso e la Libertà delle Scienze was conceived with the aim of promoting the dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge in its peaceful applications.
Made up of a number of bodies and public and private figures, the Fondazione Internazionale Trieste per il Progresso e la Libertà delle Scienze, chaired by Professor Paolo Budinich, was initially promoted by Nobel Prizewinner Professor Abdus Salam, founder of the United Nations International Centre for Theoretical Physics, first Honorary President of the Third World Academy of Science, honorary citizen of Trieste and physics graduate ad honorem of the University of Trieste.

To facilitate cooperation between university and research bodies in Trieste and international institutes the Foundation is constantly engaged in creating opportunities for researchers and graduates to implement programmes for the application of science and technology to solve problems connected with the environment, agriculture and energy.
With the primary objective of supporting proposals and plans for scientific cooperation that involve developing countries in scientific work carried out in Trieste, the Foundation does its utmost to ensure that its goals are shared by all those committed to the development and progress of society as a whole..

In 1990 the Foundation instituted the Primo Rovis International Award as a recognition of the most significant contributions to scientific and technological communication made at an international level.

The Awards Committee, composed of the foremost figures of the national and international scientific and academic institutions in the Trieste System, assesses and selects candidates from the discipline chosen each year and publicised in all the relevant Italian and foreign scientific and museum institutions.
