Set in an urbanised environment, the Marine Nature Reserve of Miramare – managed by WWF Italia on behalf of the Sea Defence Service of the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of the Territory – has developed over the years into a site where technology and eco-ethological research have come together in identifying the reserve effect - understanding the conservation potential that may lie even in a restricted area.

From this standpoint the reserve concerns itself with the reproductive biology of a range of fish species, the quantitative and qualitative visual census of the fish stock, the migration patterns of fish of conservational and industrial significance and how fishing carried out on the boundaries of the reserve may threaten the protected area. The results of these observations and analyses are correlated to the chemical and physical characteristics of the water - its salinity and oxygen levels - of which daily readings are taken with multi-parameter probes.

The results of this research are disseminated in a number of directions, ranging from the scientific community to teaching work. The facility’s most attractive feature is the Visitors’ Centre located in the Habsburg Castelletto in the gardens of the Castle of Miramare
