The role of the Council is to advise the Centre on its programmes of activities having due regard to major academic, scientific, educational and cultural trends in the world relevant to the Centre's objectives. The Council meets once a year to discuss the Centre's accomplishments and its plans for the coming year.

World-renowned scientists, including Nobel Laureates, have served on the Scientific Council over the years. The first Council chairman was J. Robert Oppenheimer. ICTP's Scientific Council has proven instrumental in shaping the Centre's research priorities and programmes.
