Elementary Particle TheorySubmitted by admin on Thu, 2006-12-07 10:50.
The Sector is engaged in fundamental research in the field of Elementary Particle Physics, with applications to Astrophysics and Cosmology, as well as in String and Brane Theory, which provide the most promising approach towards a unified description of all forces in Nature, including gravity. Another branch of application consists of Statistical Field Theory, i.e. in the description of critical phenomena by means of methods and concepts of quantum field theory. Among the topics being studied there are the theory and phenomenology of neutrino mixing and oscillations, physics within the Standard Model Theory of particle interactions and its extensions, the problem of flavor, the problem of Dark Matter in the Universe, leptogenesis theory of generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, unification of the fundamental particle interactions within the Grand Unified and String theories. The last subject includes, in particular, the problem of supersymmetry breaking via extra dimensions in field and string theories, string field theory, tachyon condensation and properties of the vacuum in string theory, non-commutative field theory and related issues in string theory together with decay properties of massive states in string theory. In Statistical Field Theory current topics of interest include Conformal Field Theory, the exact S-matrix approach and the Form Factor computation of correlation functions, as well as the extension of these methods to non-integrable systems.
