This Sector studies the properties of solid and liquid matter using a fundamental, theoretical approach. Among the areas of interest of particular note are general solid state theory, and the physics and chemestry of solid surfaces. Other areas include the atomis simulations of materials under extreme temperature and pressure conditions, the theory of metal-to-insulator transitions, thee theory of high-temperature superconductivity in systems with strongly correlated electrons, the development of quantum annealing techniques to optimize complex systems, the theory and simulation of nanosystems, especially metal nao-wires, helium nano-drops, and nano-friction between surfaces.
