The Laboratory of Marine Biology is managed by a Consortium comprising the Universities of Trieste and Udine and the Provincial authority and City Council of Trieste.

The President of the Consortium is the Mayor of Trieste and on his behalf by proxy Professor Antonio Brambati. Scientific management is in the hands of a Committee of experts directed by Serena Fonda Umani, Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Trieste.
The permanent scientific staff is composed of ten researchers, chemists, biologists and geologists, who are assisted by a further 25 researchers and technicians.

The Laboratory facilities are made available to a large number of university students for experimental work on their degree theses, and high-school and specialised students attend practical work periods at the Laboratory. Many students from EU universities and foreign researchers also work there. The Laboratory’s teaching work includes the organisation of guided visits, specialised lessons and summer courses designed for students of various disciplines and levels.
The Laboratory is organised in three sections:

Hydrology;

Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology;

Marine Biology

- each of which is subdivided into departments equipped with up-to-date sophisticated equipment, making it possible to carry out traditional analyses and more advanced research.

The Laboratory’s research work spans traditional marine biology, biological oceanography, the planktonic and ocean-bed systems and coastal and polar environments. The Laboratory is involved in a large number of national and international research projects on the Adriatic basin and the Tyrrhenian Sea, and is taking part in the National Antarctic Research Project.

But the biggest project, financed by the EU and the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Regional government under the Italy-Slovenia Interreg Programme, concerns the Gulf of Trieste.
