The Fondazione Carlo e Dirce Callerio ONLUS is a non-profit-making body founded in the 1970s to promote basic scientific research in biology and medicine. Located in the Trieste University complex, it has about 250 square metres of equipped laboratory space for the use of specialised researchers and technicians. Research currently centres on the applications of lysozyme in zootechnics and the identification and study of innovative medicines able to check the growth and development of metastases in human tumours.
To further this research, the year 2000, with the indispensable contribution of the Fondazione CRTrieste, saw the establishment of a section named LINFA, a specialised laboratory for the study of metal-based non-toxic or low-toxic compounds able to interfere with carcinoma metastases. LINFA’s aim is to focus research on the active ingredients of NAMI-A, the powerful anti-metastasis agent identified and characterised in Trieste with the support of the Fondazione Callerio.
Subject to the availability of funds, every year the Foundation assigns study grants for work in its laboratories and attendance at courses and scientific conferences and in support of research doctorate courses.
