ICS - UNIDO International Centre for Science and Hight Technology

ICS was established in 1988 to act as a focus for transfer of advanced technologies to developing and emerging countries, with the goal of sustainable industrial development. The Centre is funded through an annual contribution from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and operates under the aegis of UNIDO, exploiting the Organization's technology promotion network and complementing the specific services it offers.

Strong ties with members of the UN family, the Central European Initiative, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as a series of agreements with governments around the world ensure priority-level co-operation on multilateral projects, particularly on a regional scale.

Know-how and technologies
Skills developed are based on a set of IT decision-support tools for application in areas of chemistry, the environment, high technology and new materials. Activities focus on high-level multilateral projects involving partners across a number of developing countries. Project promotion and formulation is a key area at ICS.

Proposals received at ICS from prospective partner institutions are assessed for economic, environmental, technological and social viability. Valid projects are then put forward for funding to donors such as the European Community and the World Bank.

Courses and workshops offer training in technical skills and also serve as the basis for formulation of project proposals. Around 50 activities are organized per year. In addition, ICS has long experience in training in technology management and transfer skills. Activities cover fields such as technology management, technology foresight and business alliances.

Products, services and applications
ICS offers its collaborators and partners a set of IT-based services such as drug design, industrial site planning and high-tech systems design. These services are based on decision-support tools, built up as core expertise in areas such as software for technology assessment, process simulation, image engineering, geographic information systems, mathematical modelling and molecular modelling.

Extensive databases of best available technologies economically viable, scientific experts, contact institutions and so on are available to project partners. ICS provides know-how in their application and has experience in their adaptation to individual national contexts.
